Creators of South Park head to Broadway
Dubbed the “potty mouth duo” from Colorado, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, best known for their crude animation series, South Park, are taking the spotlight as their show The “Book of Mormon” joins the bright lights of Broadway.
Offensive, funny or heart-warming?
Critics are calling the show “sweet” and the New York Times says, “… ‘The Book of Mormon’ achieves something like a miracle. It both makes fun of and ardently embraces the all-American art form of the inspirational book musical. No Broadway show has so successfully had it both ways since Mel Brooks adapted his film “The Producers” for the stage a decade ago. Directed by Casey Nicholaw and Mr. Parker, with choreography by Mr. Nicholaw, ‘The Book of Mormon’ has its tasty cake (from an old family recipe) and eats it with sardonic relish.”

The “Book of Mormon” is about two Salt Lake City missionaries who travel to Uganda, Africa. Set in an unfamiliar world the two educators end up learning more than they teach. The show cleverly uses Mormonism to talk about religion; the religion that both Trey and Matt say is full of people who are ALWAYS happy – the very same people who have seen the Broadway hit and found it “heart-warming.”
14 Tony Award Nominations
With creators from both South Park and Avenue Q, a knee-slapping time is of course guaranteed. The music and production is up for 14 Tony Award nominations and surprisingly enough is bringing in more hype than Julie Taymor’s (Dirctor of the “Lion King”) newest show, “Spider-Man.” Who knew the joksters who create characters from human bodily functions could trump someone like Taymor?
