With odds running against them and in an unexpected turn of events, the New York Giants creamed the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday, 37-20. The Giants played a consistent game against the less than spectacular Packers leading to their victory and road to the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
1991 NFC Championship Game
Outside of fans, not many were forecasting a NY Giants win in this playoff game against last year’s Super Bowl champs. The Green Bay Packers boasted an impressive 15-1 season while the Giants barely made it with a 9-7 record.
Once in the playoffs though the Giants proved that they deserved a shot and reminded everyone that they are also a championship team that has what it takes.
Giants fans can breathe easy once again now that Eli Manning is back to practice. It was reported yesterday that Manning was missing due to a bug. With the game in just a few days, many were speculating with the quarterback would be back and able to play his fullest.
It was announced Thursday, that after one day of rest, Eli Manning was back and ready to practice. Missing this past Wednesday’s practice was the first practice Manning has missed all season. The “stomach bug” has settled and backup quarterback Carr won’t be taking the field on Sunday’s game after all.
New York Giants Rivalry against the San Francisco 49ers
One of the most legendary interdivision rivalries is between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. This rivalry dates back to the 1980s when the Giants first met the 49ers in 1981. Since that game, the two teams have met in the playoffs five more times.
This 2012 NFC Championship game is a rematch to the 1990 game where the Giants came out triumphant. Keep in mind that the victor in four of the six playoff games between the two teams went on to win the Super Bowl.
